Before the gun control debate once again reopens and of course nothing comes of it. Yesterday's tragic events point me to a quote by Murray Edelman:

In dealing with crime we scrutinize a social problem that is dramatic and immediately threatening, with conspicuous villains and victims. The villains are deviants from the norms of middle-class culture who are typically seen as suspicious, sinister, or evil, sometimes even before they commit any crimes.

The focus on the individual rather than the social structures and its institutions overlooks the very biases which can actually create these problems.

Something to think about when the media digs into the troubled writings of this student, his loner personality, while greater societal issues are overlooked.
